Day 1, December, 8th of the year 2009. I left my house and my family behind me for the first time. Xiao Yu was asleep for the better, it avoided screams and tears. My tears. Today has been a long first day on the boat. There are people all over the place, many of them busy with more tasks than they can handle, many of them just wandering around, lost in the hectic excitement. The cacophony of so many different languages mixed with the knowledge of the difficult tasks ahead makes me think of Babel. I hope that God will help us with this one. (more…)
Klimatmötet i Köpenhamn bör inte leda till ett handlingskraftigt avtal. Tvärtemot miljöaktivister menar nationalekonomen Nils Lundgren att inga omfattande reformer för att minska koldioxidutsläpp ska genomföras. Att klimatmötet blir ett fiasko menar Nils är positivt, då ett misslyckat avtal stoppar en onödig ökning av världssvälten. Nils är inte ensam om att se miljövänliga reformer, vars positiva konsekvenser är betvivlade, som en källa till ökad fattigdom i världen. Björn Lundgren, docent i skoglig marklära och ekologi, menar att ekologisk odling ogrundat tvingas på tredje världen, vilket hindrar u-ländernas utveckling.
Climate change is moving up and up on the international political agenda. At the time of writing, thousands of diplomats, journalists and activists - including myself and a hundred other young liberals - are preparing to enter the arena of the climate change conference in Copenhagen. Special editions of newspapers and features on television make it seem as if we are having an event ahead of us similar to the world football championship.
Det börjar med The Big Bang, sedan följer tillkomsten av vårt stjärnsystem, jorden, djuren, människan och klimatkrisen. Året är 2055, Las Vegas ligger kvävt mitt i en öken, London är översvämmat, Taj Mahal står i ruiner och Sidney står i brand. Kåkstäderna är överfulla, på gatorna ligger berg av sopor och mitt i det smältande Arktis har ett globalt arkiv byggts där all världens konst förvaras tillsammans med två djur av varje art, likt Noahs ark, och alla vår tids böcker, filmer och forskning finns lagrade på enorma servrar. Detta är den ytterst symboliska inledningen till filmen The Age of Stupid, en futuristisk dramadokumentär om vår tids dumhet, ett samhälle styrt av konsumtion och inte av förnuft. Ett samhälle som driver sig självt in i klimatkrisen, och döden trots att vi har möjligheten att stoppa utvecklingen.
