Zambias hälsoministerium hamnade på de internationella löpsedlarna förra året när det kom fram att 50 miljoner biståndskronor hade försvunnit. I Sverige, en av de största bidragsgivarna till den zambiska hälsosektorn, utlöste uppdagandet en kris mellan Sida och biståndsminister Gunilla Carlsson. En kris som i förra veckan ledde till avskedande av Sidas generaldirektör Anders Nordström. För zambierna själva kom inte avslöjandet som någon större överraskning, korruption har för många blivit en del av vardagen. Under två månaders tid besökte jag huvudstaden Lusaka, åkte taxi, läste tidningar och lyssnade på radio, överallt diskuterades korruption.

BANANAS!* är en svensk dokumentärfilm från 2009 som handlar om kampen i rättssalen mellan tolv plantagearbetare som på 1970-talet arbetade på bananplantager i Nicaragua och bananjätten Dole. Anledningen till konflikten är att arbetarna hävdar att bekämpningsmedlet DBCP som sprutades över bananplantagerna på 1970-talet har orsakat sterilitet. Lyckades David segra över Goliat?

Inglorious Czech presidency of the EU, general economic recession, Hungarian financial problems, corruption, difficulties in law enforcement and public manifestations of radicalism. These are just some of the headlines from Central European region, which you might remember from the near past. Three out of Visegrád 4 countries - Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia - are holding elections in the coming two months. Hungarians voted last weekend in the first round. The concentration of this possible turning point in politics is an interesting opportunity to stop for a moment and consider the development in Central Europe during the last four years - with all its complexities.

Lagom till vårens ankomst till Baltikum anlände jag till Litauens huvudstad, Vilnius. På jakt efter både nytta och nöje ville jag se med egna ögon vad som var på gång i landet som kämpat för självständighet under stora delar av sin historia. Under de följande tre dagarna blandades intrycken med resultatet att vissa av mina frågor besvarades medan nya väcktes. Det som kanske främst fångade mitt intresse var stadens många kontraster och de kulturella skillnader som uppdagades när man fick chans att träffa och bo tillsammans med några tvättäkta vilniusbor.

What is the best way to build a democracy in the world’s third richest oil-country? Answer: Outsource the planning of the new system to a company and let them take care of it. This may sound unreal but that was the way it was done in Iraq shortly after the invasion in 2003. The economy of Iraq went from being a planned economy to a fiasco of privatization dictated by a “Free Market for Dummies” book. The economy was not the only thing to be privatized - everything was in some way touched by the new order.

In the year 2003 Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. They were part of an evil alliance, dubbed “the axis of evil”, and they also supported the Al-Qaida terrorist network. These familiar arguments were provided by the world’s only superpower, The United States of America. The US invaded Iraq in order to overthrow Saddam Hussein, their former ally, and to install a new democracy that would pave the way for a new democratic Middle East and solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Two elections have so far been held in Iraq, in 2005 and in 2010. This article discusses the political structure of Iraq leading up to the elections this week.
